Ultra Wide Band Technology Overview
Ultra Wide Band (UWB) is a wireless communication protocol defined in the 802.15.4a and 802.15.4z IEEE standards, this standard allows a device to use a technique called time of Flight (ToF) that it is useful to measure the time that a RF signal takes to travel from one device to another device, UWB has a very big Bandwidth of 500MHz fifty times bigger than Wifi, this makes it possible to measure distances from device to device with an unprecedented resolution of centimeters over long distances.
UWB is the only available technology in the ISM band that can offer a resolution level of centimeters for wireless distance measurement, as an extra feature UWB can send messages with custom data with a transmission speed of 6.8Mbps using an extremely low quantity of energy, enabling devices to operate for years with a single AA or coin cell battery without the need to be recharged.
UWB is the best in class technology for high accuracy location systems because it was designed from scratch specifically for this purpose, unlike other modified alternatives like WiFi or Bluetooth Low Energy where the Bandwidth is 50 or 500 smaller respectively, and this matter because the bandwidth is directly proportional to the maximum measurement resolution of distance.

How Ultra Wide Band Works
UWB enables to use Time of Flight (ToF), which is a distance measurement method used to measure the distance between two RF devices by multiplying the Time of Flight of a signal by the constant value of the speed of light (3x10^8m/s). From this physical principle, the UWB technology can be used with several techniques the most used and practical methods are Two Way Ranging (TWR) and Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA). In Galileo we have UWB RTLS Solutions based on Two Way Ranging (TWR) and Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) techniques that allows to track hundreds or thousands of assets in real time respectively.
Why UWB is the Best in Class Technology for Real Time Location Systems
Unlike other wireless technologies like WiFi or Bluetooth Low Energy, these have been modified for location applications having a bad performance (5 meters of resolution average), the physical properties of the UWB RF signal were specifically defined from the start to achieve real time, ultra high accuracy location and communication.
Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) Technology
The Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) location technique is very similar to the technique used in GPS. Multiple fixed reference devices called anchors (or RTLS Antennas) are installed over a building/factory/office/field, the anchors should be time synchronized in the scale of pico-seconds (1x10^-12). The tags transmit periodical broadcast messages that are received by the installed anchors, and the anchors record the timestamps of the received blink messages. The timestamps recorded by the anchors are forwarded to a computer server that runs a central location engine software that uses the received timestamps in a complex multilateration algorithm based in the Time Difference of Arrival of the received blinks, the output of this algorithm is the computed X, Y, Z location data of each Tag or mobile asset.
Time Difference of Arrival technology is recommended for large industrial systems with the possibility to grow unlimitedly in area, and that require to locate thousand of mobile assets. TDoA also allow the tags to consume less energy than TWR enabling to have tags with a battery life of more than 5 years. The only disadvantage of TDoA vs. TWR is that it is more complex and expensive to implement.
Two Way Ranging (TWR) Technology
The Two Way Ranging (TWR) location technique uses the Round Trip Time of Flight (ToF) method to measure the distance between two different devices. The Tags and the Anchors exchange messages periodically, that can share data and also measure the distance between them simultaneously, a tag sends an starting message then the anchor respond and finally the tag sends a confirmation to the anchor, by this way the tag and the anchor can divide by 2 the round trip time of the signal and multiply it by the value of the speed of light to get the actual distance from one device to the other, both Tang and Anchor can know the distance. Using the methodology described before a tag can measure his own distance to several near anchors in order to apply a complex multilateration algorithm to the measured distances in order to obtain a 2D or 3D XYZ location. Then this data information is broad-casted by the tag and a listener device (RTLS Gateway) can forward this information to a computer server.
Two Way Ranging is recommended for industrial systems that requires to locate a quantity of assets in the magnitude of hundreds, if you require to locate more than 1000 assets the recommended option is TDoA. The disadvantage of TWR vs. TDoA is that the tags consume more energy reducing the battery life time to months or a year, the major advantage of TWR is that requires less infrastructure than TDoA this reduces significantly the initial investment.

UWB enables to use Time of Flight (ToF), which is a distance measurement method used to measure the distance between two RF devices by multiplying the Time of Flight of a signal by the constant value of the speed of light (3x10^8m/s). From this physical principle, the UWB technology can be used with several techniques the most used and practical methods are Two Way Ranging (TWR) and Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA). In Galileo we have UWB RTLS Solutions based on Two Way Ranging (TWR) and Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) techniques that allows to track hundreds or thousands of assets in real time respectively.
Why UWB is the Best in Class Technology for Real Time Location Systems
Unlike other wireless technologies like WiFi or Bluetooth Low Energy, these have been modified for location applications having a bad performance (5 meters of resolution average), the physical properties of the UWB RF signal were specifically defined from the start to achieve real time, ultra high accuracy location and communication.
Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) Technology
The Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) location technique is very similar to the technique used in GPS. Multiple fixed reference devices called anchors (or RTLS Antennas) are installed over a building/factory/office/field, the anchors should be time synchronized in the scale of pico-seconds (1x10^-12). The tags transmit periodical broadcast messages that are received by the installed anchors, and the anchors record the timestamps of the received blink messages. The timestamps recorded by the anchors are forwarded to a computer server that runs a central location engine software that uses the received timestamps in a complex multilateration algorithm based in the Time Difference of Arrival of the received blinks, the output of this algorithm is the computed X, Y, Z location data of each Tag or mobile asset.
Time Difference of Arrival technology is recommended for large industrial systems with the possibility to grow unlimitedly in area, and that require to locate thousand of mobile assets. TDoA also allow the tags to consume less energy than TWR enabling to have tags with a battery life of more than 5 years. The only disadvantage of TDoA vs. TWR is that it is more complex and expensive to implement.
Two Way Ranging (TWR) Technology
The Two Way Ranging (TWR) location technique uses the Round Trip Time of Flight (ToF) method to measure the distance between two different devices. The Tags and the Anchors exchange messages periodically, that can share data and also measure the distance between them simultaneously, a tag sends an starting message then the anchor respond and finally the tag sends a confirmation to the anchor, by this way the tag and the anchor can divide by 2 the round trip time of the signal and multiply it by the value of the speed of light to get the actual distance from one device to the other, both Tang and Anchor can know the distance. Using the methodology described before a tag can measure his own distance to several near anchors in order to apply a complex multilateration algorithm to the measured distances in order to obtain a 2D or 3D XYZ location. Then this data information is broad casted by the tag and a listener device (RTLS Gateway) can forward this information to a computer server.
Two Way Ranging is recommended for industrial systems that requires to locate a quantity of assets in the magnitude of hundreds, if you require to locate more than 1000 assets the recommended option is TDoA. The disadvantage of TWR vs. TDoA is that the tags consume more energy reducing the battery life time to months or a year, the major advantage of TWR is that requires less infrastructure than TDoA this reduces significantly the initial investment.
